Native Plant Garden in Cascade Locks Park to Honor Christine Freitag

A native plant garden in Cascade Locks Park will honor the late Christine Freitag, member of The Akron Garden Club and former president (1993-95) of The Garden Club of America (GCA). The garden, a restoration of a site overtaken by invasive plants, is along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and is being developed in collaboration with Summit Metro Parks.

The effort is part of the GCA’s Partners for Plants initiative, a habitat restoration program that facilitates hands-on projects between local GCA clubs and land managers on federal, state, local, and other significant public lands. Installation will begin in 2020. Many native plants are being grown by club members from seeds they collected.Freitag was a long-time supporter of the Cascade Locks Park Association. Partners for Plants was established as a GCA program during her presidency.
